Temporary Workers Guide

Definition of Temping
Different industries refer to a temporary position in different ways. You may hear it referred to as ‘freelancing’. Here, we have outlined a generic explanation of temporary employment.

A temporary employee is exactly that. One who works for a company on a non-fixed term basis. The employee's salary is usually calculated on an hourly or daily rate and is paid through the Cameron Kennedy payroll. No notice period is required to terminate temporary employment by either party.

Companies employ people on a temporary basis for many reasons including:

• cover for maternity leave, medium term sick leave or other absences;
• during peak busy periods of the year;
• to consider a persons performance with a view to permanent employment;
• assistance with short or longer term special projects;
• crisis management;
• to deal with issues where there is no one available with specialist skills;
• business expansion or shut-down.

Whatever your reasons for entering temporary employment there are many issues to consider, and it is advisable to treat them with the same professionalism with which you would expect to approach your paid employment itself.
